Intelligent Pain-Relief
If you have ever experienced chronic pain you will know how debilitating it can be and how it can diminish your performance and enjoyment in every aspect of life. Unfortunately the vast majority of responses to chronic pain are aimed at the symptoms, leaving the real causes to persist.
"Intelligent Pain Relief" is my own methodology for helping you address the real causes of chronic pain with a whole-person approach that integrates psychological and physiological factors.
"I attended a course of six Alexander Technique classes to understand how to apply it to my everyday life activities, especially for my bike riding and running which had been causing me some pain. I am now enjoying two of my favourite activities practically pain-free. Thanks Brendan!" Loretta Carboon, Process Specialist
An Analysis of Chronic Pain
The causes of chronic pain fall into two categories:
- Structural issues such as disease, improperly healed injuries, and congenital structural problems.
- Functional issues which arise from the ways in which we think and move.
Of course both causes of pain may be present simultaneously and may exacerbate each other. In the case of structural issues, you should consult a medical specialist. If the issues are functional, then I can help.
"Functioning" is simply the way in which we perform our everyday tasks such as sitting, walking, and talking. People who experience chronic pain are often unknowingly contributing to their own pain by the way in which they co-ordinate themselves in day-to-day activities. They may use excessive, insufficient, or imbalanced muscular effort in such a way that excess pressure and wear and tear lead to pain, even though there is no consciousness of the causes at a muscular level. This process will also always include patterns of thought and emotion associated with the imbalanced use of muscles.
Dealing with the Causes
Using the Alexander Technique and NLP I help you unravel those patterns in your co-ordination that are causing you pain, and replace them with constructive and immediately practical alternatives. By learning to co-operate with your own structure and direct your thoughts and actions constructively you can massively reduce and often eliminate entirely the cause, and therefore also the symptoms, of your chronic pain.
This process has lasting results because it involves you in learning, in a very practical way, about your own functioning so that you have control over how you think, move, and feel. This leads to greater ...
- Enjoyment,
- Empowerment,
- Optimism,
- Confidence, and
- Energy,
... in all your activities, at work and at play, so you can leave chronic pain behind and get on with living.
